WRITING

Year 1 

Form individual letters correctly and confidently.  

Make a phonetically plausible attempt to spell words, sometimes incorrectly. 

Spell some words from the year 1 & 2 curriculum word list correctly in independent writing.  

Begin to use capital letters, full stops, question marks, exclamation marks. 

Write simple sentences in sequence to form short narratives. 

Use the conjunction ‘and’ to link ideas within a sentence.  

Begin to think aloud to collect ideas, draft and re-read their work to check the meaning is clear.  

Year 2 

Demonstrate security of all year 1 writing end of year expectations. 

Correct letter orientation and begin to join their writing.  

Spell words in a phonetically plausible way and spell most words from the year 1 & 2 curriculum word list correctly in independent writing.  

Use capital letters, full stops, question marks, exclamation marks and commas in lists mostly correctly. 

Use apostrophes mostly accurately to mark singular possession. 

Use present and past tense correctly. 

Construct sentences using co-ordination and subordination. 

Use noun phrases and adverbs to add description to their writing. 

Explain how different types of writing are structured and apply this to their own and others’ writing. 

Think aloud to collect ideas, plan, draft and re-read their work to check the meaning is clear.  

Year 3 

Demonstrate security of all year 1 and 2 writing end of year expectations. 

Begin to use joined handwriting throughout independent writing.  

Spell some words from the year 3 & 4 curriculum correctly in independent writing.  

Begin to understand how writing is different from speech and use inverted commas to punctuate direct speech. 

Begin to express time, place and cause using conjunctions, adverbs and/or prepositions. 

Begin to organise their work into sections around a main theme (paragraphs) or use headings and sub-headings to aid presentation. 

Write for a range of real purposes and audiences as part of their work across the curriculum. 

Begin to understand the skills and processes for writing: thinking aloud, collecting ideas, drafting, re-reading. 

Year 4 

Demonstrate security of all year 1, 2 and 3 writing end of year expectations. 

Use a joined handwriting throughout their independent writing. 

Spell most words from the year 3 & 4 curriculum correctly in independent writing. 

Use the apostrophe mostly correctly for plural possession. 

Use fronted adverbials followed by a comma. 

Choose an appropriate pronoun or noun within and across sentences to aid cohesion and avoid repetition . 

Use inverted commas and other punctuation mostly accurately to indicate direct speech. 

Organise their work into sections around a main theme (paragraphs) or use headings and sub-headings to aid presentation. 

Understand the skills and processes that are essential for writing in order to enhance the effectiveness of their writing. 

Think aloud to explore/collect ideas, draft and re-read their writing to check the meaning is clear. 

Year 5 

Demonstrate security of all year 1, 2, 3 and 4 writing end of year expectations. 

Use a consistent joined handwriting style throughout their independent writing. 

Spell some words from the year 5 & 6 curriculum correctly in independent writing. 

Begin to use semi-colons to link two independent clauses. 

Begin to use commas, dashes and brackets mostly accurately to embed additional information within sentences.  

Ensure the consistent and correct use of tense throughout a piece of writing.  

Write effective descriptions. 

Begin to control the structure of sentences and use a range of conjunctions and some cohesive devices within and across paragraphs. 

Write for a range of audiences and purpose and begin to select appropriate features and vocabulary to enhance the meaning. 

Proof-read their own writing for spelling and punctuation errors. 

Evaluate their own and others’ writing, proposing some improvements to the vocabulary, punctuation or grammar. 

Year 6 

Demonstrate security of all year 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 writing end of year expectations. 

Use a consistent and fluent handwriting style with greater speed throughout their independent writing. 

Spell most words from the year 5 & 6 curriculum correctly in independent writing. 

Use semi-colons and colons to link two independent clauses and to punctuate lists mostly correctly. 

Use the full range of punctuation for parenthesis mostly correctly 

Use a range of verb forms to enhance meaning. 

Adopt, create and sustain a writing voice/style. 

Consciously control the structure of sentences in writing and use a range of cohesive devices within and across paragraphs. 

Write for a range of audiences and purpose and select appropriate features and vocabulary to enhance the meaning. 

Proof-read their own writing for spelling and punctuation errors. 

Evaluate their own and others’ writing, proposing specific improvements to the vocabulary, punctuation or grammar to enhance meaning.
